Omega 3 Fatty Acids - What they can do for you?

Healthful Nutrition with Fish Oil

Fish oil is a primary source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), which play a significant role in healthful nutrition.  EFAs are necessary for rebuilding and producing new cells.  They also affect the production of prostaglandin, a hormone like substance and can be beneficial in treating menstrual cramps and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Because EFAs cannot be made by the body, they must be supplied through the diet.  High concentrations can be found in cold water fish, like mackerel, salmon, sardines, herring and halibut.  Fish oil can also be consumed by eating the fatty fish or by taking supplements.    The benefits from the oils can lower blood pressure and cholesterol and help prevent cardiovascular disease.  Recent studies suggest they may help prevent colon cancer and help maintain healthy breast tissue especially when there is a higher level of DHA than EPA in the supplement taken.

Therapeutic Effect:  Fish oil contains high levels of vitamins A and D, so it can help prevent vitamin deficiencies, skin ailments and vision disorders.  The omega-3 fatty acids in the oils obtained from cold-water ocean fish have a positive effect on fat metabolism and can improve blood circulation by inhibiting the clotting of blood platelets.  This can help prevent deposits from forming on the blood-vessel walls and reduce the risk of heart attacks.

Tips for storing fish oils: To unsure the freshness of fish-oil supplements, do not purchase in large quantities because they can go rancid quickly.  Keep them refrigerated to preserve their quality.
